Bring Down the Sky

As a big fan of the Knights of the Old Republic, I hungrily snapped up Bioware’s sci-fi RPG Mass Effect when it was released late last year.

Although it was quite different to KOTOR in many ways, I still really enjoyed my time playing as Commander Shepherd. The main storyline and individual arcs were well written, no other developer manages to get you to care about their characters like Bioware does. Despite initial reservations about the loss of turn based combat, I really grew to love the “twitch” system. The only slight niggles about the game were technical ones like slow loading textures and the game not awarding me some of the achievements that I actually earned. I can understand that some people might feel cheated. Although the price is low (a retro XBLA title’s worth) you aren’t getting an awful lot of play time for the money.

So I was very excited about the idea of spending more time in the Mass Effect universe. Today saw the release of the first content pack, Bring Down the Sky, for a very reasonable sounding 400 MS points. I was planning to write this blog entry tomorrow once I had spent the evening playing through the DLC. Unfortunately I’ve hit a slight problem with that. I’ve already completed it.

Yes, it’s not a very long mission. I didn’t have a stop watch running or anything but I must have easily finished it in under an hour, without skipping anything. (Either that or it’s true what they say about time flying?) I can understand that some people might feel cheated. Although the price is low (a retro XBLA title’s worth) you aren’t getting an awful lot of play time for the money.

I must admit I was expecting something more along the lines of one of the main story arc missions. What you get is a fairly standard planet quest with a slightly better ending.

It feels like this DLC is just setting up the story for the next few batches to come. The new villain group does seem interesting and I bet, when the other content is released, it will form a great story arc.

As a Mass Effect fan I hope the next episode comes out quite soon as this one really didn’t satisfy my hunger for new content.
